Festival Fantazie 2011 - My Report

Last year, I complained about the insufferable heat, and this year, I have to complain about the rain. It was so incredibly cold most of the time, and many people fell ill because of the weather – myself included. I arrived on Friday evening in order to avoid the line in the reception office, unpacked my things, and spent most of the evening talking with a friend of mine.

Festival Fantazie 2011 - General Info

Most of the year, Chotebor is an ordinary town located in the heart of Europe, in the Czech Republic. In summer, however, it is transformed into one of the biggest sci-fi/fantasy conventions in Central Europe. For more than fifteen years, the organizers have been working to create a truly fantastic holiday for both general public and SFF-fans.

In the beginning, Festival Fantazie was a small fan-run convention, but over the years, it has become a large-scale festival with foreign guests and famous SFF actors – for example, David Nykl (Radek Zelenka in Star Gate Atlantis). This year, the Festival lasted for eleven days, and some of the VIPs included Michael Brunsfeld, John Ottman, and Michail Achmanov.

The entrance fee is only $12 per day, and the town offers a wide range of accommodations, from expensive and luxurious hotels to small, cheap hostels, and for adventurous people there is also the option of sleeping in their own sleeping bag and/or tent. It is possible to order cheap meals for $4 or dine out in one of the many pubs and restaurants for $5 - $15.

There are many panels and various events, for example: Star Wars, Star Trek, Star Gate, BattleStar Galactica, Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, science, anime/manga, gaming, etc … (click here to see the full list).

Some interesting lectures and presentations:

John Ottman
- a composer and movie editor, giving a lecture about soundtracks and editing

Michael Brunsfeld
- former art director in ILM, giving a lecture about visual effects

Czech Star Gate and Buffy Dubbing
- meeting with Czech dubbers of those shows, a discussion with fans

Fannish theatrical performance (Honor Harrington panel)

Fannish theatrical performance (Star Trek panel)

EyTy Awards 2011 (Star Wars & Trek & Gate special event)
- choose your favorite character, your least favorite scene, the most awkward moment etc...

StarFleet Academy Ball (Star Trek panel) & Midnight Ballroom Dancing (MoveCon panel)
- waltz, Viennese waltz, tango, polka, blues, jive, chacha, rumba, samba, etc...
- formal robes and/or costumes recommended!

Bollywood Party, Star Wars party, etc...
- various parties for people who prefer the modern style of dance

MoveCon
- self-defense, martial arts, dancing, sport events,...

This isn't the direct translation of the Czech version, my friends, since many of the Czech insider jokes wouldn't make any sense to anyone who has never visited the Festival.

První týden prázdnin jsem strávila tradičně už pošesté na Festivalu fantazie a rozhodla jsem se, že napíšu menší report. Foťák jsem si s sebou letos nebrala, takže obrazový report musíte oželet.

English version coming soon! English version here!
